A password-protected directory or area is a folder that may be accessed only when a username and a password are provided, so no unauthorized individuals could see its content. This function can be used for the main folder of a given Internet site or just for a certain subfolder based upon the needs you have. As an example, when you are creating a new website and you don't want people to see it prior to it being ready, you may want to limit the access to it entirely, and if you want only some individuals to be able to access certain files, you may password-protect only a certain folder, while the remaining portion of the website could be seen by anybody. In either case, a “403 Forbidden” error page will appear in case the login details the visitor types in are not right. Even a direct link to a file won't work as long as any folder above it is password-protected.

Password Protected Directories in Shared Hosting

Creating a password-protected area shall take merely several clicks and a few seconds if you host your websites within a shared hosting account with us. You will not have to do anything complicated - you'll have to select a domain/subdomain, to pick which folder under it has to be secured, and then to type the login name and password that will be used to access that folder. In case a number of individuals require their own login details, there won't be a problem to set up several different usernames with access to the exact same folder. All protected folders shall appear with a padlock icon within the File Manager section, so you'll always know where this option is active. If you want to deactivate the security function for any folder, you can deactivate it from the same exact section of the CP in which you have enabled it.

Password Protected Directories in Semi-dedicated Servers

When you have a semi-dedicated server account with our company, you'll be able to shield any content you have uploaded through our protection tool. Its interface is as basic and intuitive as that of the Hepsia Control Panel it is part of, so you'll not have to enter any code at any time. You will only need to choose one of the domains/subdomains which you have in the web hosting account and to select which folder should be password-protected - the website’s root folder or some folder below it. You can then enter the username and the password, that'll be stored in encrypted form in our system, and you shall be all set. The protection will be turned on immediately, so anyone that attempts to access the freshly protected folder will have to enter the accurate login information. If a number of individuals must be able to access precisely the same content, you could make a separate username for each of them.
